Over the last few months, I’ve seen “3D” mascara popping up online here and there with people saying they’ll never return to regular mascara. Being someone who typically recommends you don’t go nuts splurging on mascara in the first place (unless you’re a They’re Real junkie like me), I was intrigued when the chance to review Looky Eyes came along from Canadian distributor Elle R Consmetiques. I figured it was a chance to finally give this trend a try and see what all the hype was about.
Looky Eyes arrived in a very ~fancy~ case, sort of like an embossed glasses case with special holders for each of the products. The first product within is the preparation gel, meant to dampen the lashes before applying the natural fibres (product two). The two work together to create the 3D effect.
Following the directions enclosed, I went through the four-step process and documented my results. Starting with clean lashes, I applied a coat of regular mascara (Benefit’s They’re Real!), then went over it with a coat of the preparation gel. Then, I applied the fibres (you’re to apply as uniformly as possible before the gel dries – they recommend you do one eye at a time here). Finally, finish off with another goal of gel. If you wish to keep building, you can keep repeating the fibre/gel steps.
Pros: I love how black and creamy (I think that’s the best adjective here) the preparation gel was – it could actually work as a great mascara on its own. It really helped amp up my regular mascara as is. I also liked how long my lashes wound up looking.
Cons: Call me lazy, but it felt like a lot of patience and precision is required here to get the best results. The fibres are tricky if you don’t get them in the right places in time, and four steps just seems like a lot when a regular swipe of mascara takes mere seconds.
Overall, I am happy with the appearance of my lashes and I do think they look blacker and longer than usual. That said, it’s probably not a product I’d reach for every day out of sheer time management in the morning. Are 3D lashes worth the hype? I think with practice and naturally full, fluffy lashes, this could be a hero product. I’ll probably pull this out when I’m short on falsies and in need of an extra lash boost. For daily wear though, I’ll likely stick to my regular mascara.
