I remember many years ago buying hair serum for the first time. It promised to get rid of all my frizz, tame my unruly curls and transform my hair, so without hesitation I purchased it with some of my hard-earned cash from my part-time job.
I got it home, went to use it the next day and pumped a lot into my hands. Ran it through my damp strands, blow dried my hair…and I looked like I’d intentionally poured three pounds of hair gel in there instead. Let’s just say I didn’t touch hair serum again for a long time…
When I came across this John Frieda Frizz Ease Thermal Protection Serum in my Spark Sessions gift bag though, I was intrigued. My hair is naturally super curly, and even though these days it tends to just wave when it air drys, it has the ability under the right conditions to curl up into a tight frizzy mess à la Anne Hathaway pre-makeover in the Princess Diaries. I think my boyfriend actually got to see just how big and curly it gets this past weekend at a spa where we spent the day going from salt-water pools to saunas over and over (that really unleashed the frizz beast).
I decided to put my past serum sorrows behind me and started using the product last week. I’m happy to report it’s going much better! One pump dispenses about a nickel size amount of product and on my short, thin undercut and it’s just the right amount (if not just a touch too much). It’s surprisingly lightweight and holds style really well. I went all day with just the serum in my hair and a bit of hairspray, and my curls stayed in place no problem. It also never felt greasy or heavy, even towards the end of the day, which is a nice bonus.
I did also give it a shot using another product (a volumizing mousse) to see how it would mix in, and that wasn’t a good idea. It doesn’t play well with others but I can assure you it performs as prescribed all on its own.
At $15.99 it’s a great product to have handy if you’ve got frizz issues or split ends. I can’t speak to how it would perform on thicker or coarse hair, but for us fine-haired frizzy ladies this will get the job done. Find it at well.ca or your local drugstore.
