Last week, I went for a picnic with Almay Canada and their National Product Trainer Jacquie Hutchinson to learn all about some of their products and how to incorporate them into a fast and easy beauty routine we can all use – I’m talking a huge time saver that will give you a soft, beautiful look.
I learned lots about the products and how easy they’ve made it for even the least enthusiastic girls out there when it comes to putting on makeup, so I’m sharing the routine step-by-step and thanks to the wonderful ladies at Almay Canada, giving you a chance to win everything in the routine so you can try it yourself! It’s definitely a much different look than I’m used to, but it’s a totally easy and quick routine that will suit just about everyone.
Read on (warning: makeup-free selfies to follow!)…
Step One: Begin with the Smart Shade CC Luminous Primer on clean skin by pumping some on to your fingertips and applying by hand. Right away you’ll see your skin perk up – it really brightens up your face! Be sure to get your entire face, as this will colour correct, moisturize and luminize your skin while holding everything in place.
Step Two: Grab the Almay Smart Shade skintone matching makeup and squeeze some on your fingers, and apply using your hands. Jacquie made it very clear this was super important – instead of using a brush or sponge, use your fingertips as this will help the ToneMimic technology work its magic. You see, Almay has created a product that is designed to match your complexion and adjust itself for a truly natural finish that will even everything out. You’ll notice it comes out white with greyish looking dots – those are the shade-sensing beads. It’s also hypoallergenic, oil-free and contains SPF to protect your skin throughout the day. Coverage is buildable, so whether you like something light or need a bit of help with coverage, it’s easy to tailor your look.
Step Three: Eyes! Jacquie pointed out one of the biggest things she hears is how many women are after a smoky eye, and I couldn’t agree more – we all want that smoky look that makes our eyes pop, but it’s definitely easier said than done. Almay intense i-color bold smoky-i palette helps you achieve the look with a foolproof, step-by-step guide. It’s laid out quite simply – you work your way from the bottom of the palette to the top, covering the base of your lid (bottom shade), then the crease (middle shade), then under your brow (top shade).
A few tricks from Jacquie: one, when you use the applicator to grab product, dab the wand on the back of your hand before you apply to your lid, as this will ensure the shadow doesn’t fall on to your cheeks. When you apply, start in the centre and press the colour from the inside out, almost in a fan-like shape. Two, when you apply the crease shade, take into consideration the kind of eyelid you have. Some of us have hooded lids, and Jacquie recommends those of us who do apply the crease shade on the bone of your eyelid instead of in the crease, as this will ensure the colour doesn’t disappear when you’re eyes are open. For women with flatter lids, Jacquie recommends applying below the crease so it can be seen when your eyes are open as well.
Step Four: Eyeliner (my fave)! I got to try Almay’s intense i-color liquid eyeliner in Brown Topaz (for blue eyes), and Jacquie recommended pulling my lid straight like a ruler to get a consistent line. This is a great tip for beginners and works well with this brush, as it’s stiffer and easier to control to get a fine or thick line, whatever you prefer. She also noted this particular eyeliner can be used on the lower lid with whatever’s left over after doing the top – just create a fine line for definition. I also filled in my brows at this point because as you can see, my natural ones need some help.
Step Five: Take the i-color Volumizing Mascara for your eye colour and get in there! The one for blue eyes is a beautiful deep navy colour, and the brush has a ton of bristles to give you lots of volume. Start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the wand from side to side while pulling up in an exaggerated way – this will ensure all of the lashes are covered and there’s lots of volume.
Step Six: At this point, the eyes are finished and it’s time to polish off the look with bronzer. Using the smart shade Powder Bronzer and the enclosed brush (in the bottom), highlight your cheek bones and be sure to do a light dusting all over. Don’t stop at the ears! According to Jacquie, it’s important to remember to dust some bronzer on your ears, neck and forehead to get a more natural look.
Step Seven: Finally, finish off with a swipe of the color + care lip balm to perfect your pout, and your natural, quick and easy look is complete!
As I mentioned, it’s definitely different from what I usually do but I must say, the products are easy to use and foolproof – there’s very little room for error in choose shades that suit your skin and eye tones, no need for fancy brushes or tools and the steps are right there for you to follow. When the day is done and it’s time to take everything off, Almay’s even made it easy for you to do that using their eye makeup remover pads and remover towelettes – they’ve honestly thought of everything!
