Last night I went and saw Jason Mraz at Massey Hall in Toronto with my boyfriend, Brad. A while back I made a promise to myself I wouldn’t miss him if he came to Toronto again, and sure enough when a tour was announced for his latest album Yes!, I made sure to grab tickets. Brad unfortunately got dragged along…since Mraz tends to be on the underrated end of the spectrum among my circle of friends, I didn’t really have anyone to go with and Brad usually becomes my fallback for these things when I need a buddy (that said, I’d like to do a concert alone just once in my life).
The show was spectacular. He brought along Raining Jane, a kick-ass girl band from California who worked on Yes! with Jason, as well as songs like A Beautiful Mess from We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. (both an all-time favourite song and album of mine). He played a really great range of career-spanning tunes and definitely showed off some mad vocal chops (he nailed Mr. Curiosity, a beautiful song from his 2005 album Mr. A-Z) and overall it was a really wonderful evening.
Sorry for the lame lyric video…it was the best I could find!
If you’ve ever sat down and listened to a lot of his music in one sitting you can’t help but turn into a romantic mushy ball of love and sensitivity, so sitting through the concert with my S.O. as we head into Thanksgiving weekend had me all kinds of appreciative and grateful for the people in my life. This weekend will be the first in a long, long time my entire immediate family will be under one roof where it’s just us. I come from an incredibly close family…4 towns/cities and 7 moves throughout your childhood will do that to you, since there were many times my only friends were my sisters when we landed somewhere new. It’s sure to be a really great weekend with lots to celebrate (a promotion, engagement, birthday and of course, Thanksgiving) so yeah…I’m counting down the minutes.
What are your plans for the long weekend? Will you be spending time with family?
