We’ve been very lucky so far this winter – while it’s definitely been on the chilly side, it’s been nothing like the polar vortex we were experiencing this time last year. I’ve gotten away with wearing a much lighter winter jacket than I’m used to, but I feel like it’s only a matter of time before January really shows us what winter is all about.
One of the worst parts about winter fashion is striking a balance between practical and fashionable. We want to wear what we like and what we think looks good, but more often than not we end up piling on the layers of sweaters, scarves, coats, gloves, hats, and so on just to stay warm. It’s hard to find designers who get it for those of us who can’t shell out $600+ for a Canada Goose jacket.
Enter Melow by Mélissa Bolduc. A Canadian (!) brand who makes garments that are all about sophistication, comfort, simplicity and flattery. After scanning through the Fall/Winter 2014-2015 collection, my eyes landed on a jacket I had to try – the Nana coat.
The coat is literally described as a cocoon, so naturally I was drawn to it. Putting it on was like crawling into bed, but instead drowning in a giant puffy down coat I was wearing a chic, simple coat that complemented my frame. It comes in three colours, grey (which is what I tried), black and a mustard yellow and sizes small, medium and large. At $370 it is an investment, but I found the style to be on the classic side and you simply can’t go wrong with Canadian designed and made.
