Summer is practically here, and that means we can finally break free from the confines of our homes and spend time being social outdoors! While I love having people over, living in the city sometimes means space is limited for outdoor entertaining and you need to get creative to decorate your space accordingly.
I teamed up with Pinnacle Vodka to create the perfect party atmosphere right in my “backyard,” (my apartment balcony) and used some helpful tips to transform the space into prime party central.
Choosing a theme is essential for selecting every detail of the event. For my party, I decided on La Bonne Vie (“the good life”) and kept this in mind to choose everything from lighting to napkins. If you’re working with a smaller space like me, it’s important to focus on all of the details as that’s what’s going to really make a difference for your guests.
When choosing decor, do your research and think of ways you can bring simple additions to the space that will have a big impact. Fresh flowers, patio lighting, simple outdoor furniture and linens are all easy and relatively low-cost ways to change the appearance of your yard.
Since space was limited on my patio, I focused a lot of my efforts on smaller details. Fresh flowers were a standout way to bring some life to the party, so I grabbed a colourful bouquet from a local market to use as a centrepiece on my patio table. I also decided some string lights would add just the right amount of ambience and searched my local outdoor supply store for options, landing on a string of solar-powered round white lights that were without needing an electrical outlet (something my porch doesn’t have).
I knew part of the transformation would include serving up my cocktails and snacks with things a little nicer than your typical paper plates. After pulling out my best glassware for drinks, I hit a party supply store to see what I could find that could double as serving materials and decor. I found some great houndstooth napkins, sturdy-yet-disposable gold square paper plates and black formal plastic forks that rival even my regular cutlery in design. All of these tied back to the theme and managed to dress up the space even further.
Above all, it’s important to make sure you have fun with your space when it comes to making it over for a patio party! DIY where it makes sense, check your local thrift store for things like furniture and linens, and try to make every detail count if you’re working with limited space. Happy hosting!
