It’s true, Valentine’s Day is just a little over a week away! To me, there are two very different perspectives on V-Day – those who hate it because of how commercial and/or exclusionary it feels, and those who love it for what it’s about. I’m in the latter camp.
While I’m definitely not one to expect lavish gifts or grand gestures, I do really enjoy the idea of a day that’s about recognizing those you love, whether they’re your family, friends or a significant other and I think that’s what it should be about – simply finding a way to make them feel a little special. Of course I agree with the argument that days like this shouldn’t be limited to February 14, but the fact is life gets pretty busy sometimes and I just can’t hate the idea of day exclusively devoted to love.
I’ve outlined some of my favourite gift ideas for those in your life you might want to share something with – let me know what you think!
For Your Girlfriend
If you’re not into exchanging gifts, I think a really romantic thing to do is simply to cook your lady a nice dinner. One of my favourite Valentine’s in recent years was when Brad made surf and turf at home and we actually cooked it together – including the live lobsters. We had fresh veggies, potatoes, plenty of wine and it was a totally great evening.
If you’re thinking of doing something unique together, I say check out Groupon, believe it or not. Things like paint nights, cooking classes or wine tours are all great ways to do something fun and romantic together and Groupon always has a ton of deals for those kinds of things.
Exchanging gifts? Of course, I believe you can never go wrong with beauty and there’s plenty of choices this time of year. Something like the Tease Me Lip Set ($38.00) from MAKE UP FOR EVER’S Fifty Shades of Grey line includes three great products she can use to create a look inspired by the film.
If you want to splurge, something like a Clarisonic Mia2 ($180.00 – in red, no less) will not only impress her, but keep her skin looking and feeling fresh – it’s one of the most coveted skincare tools on the market for a reason.
For Your Boyfriend
I don’t know about yours, but my boyfriend definitely appreciates quality products when it comes to taking care of himself – particularly when it comes to shaving. In recent years he’s really developed an appreciation for a fine shaving brush and soap, and this kit ($242.81) from DivinaDenuevo on Etsy is just plain gorgeous. The distressed brown leather is masculine and rustic, and the kit comes with all the key elements of a great at-home shave. It’s definitely on the pricier end of the spectrum, but it’s handmade, Canadian and comes highly recommended. If you aren’t looking to spend a whole lot, The Body Shop offers some great men’s skincare products as well as nice brushes that are relatively inexpensive.
For Your Girlfriends or Sisters
I like the idea of giving something to your friends or sisters that includes spending time together – something like a yoga class or night out together. Yoga Tree‘s intro pass is just $40 for unlimited classes, a perfect way to select a few days in the coming weeks to spend time.
You read that right! Why not indulge a little for Valentine’s Day? Whether you’re taken or single, above all you should take the chance to remind yourself how great you are and #treatyoself. I’m digging the idea of picking up a bunch of little things from Wet n Wild since the products are inexpensive and you can get a little bit of everything. I really like their Mega Slicks Balm Stain ($2.99 at Well.ca) – a highly pigmented glossy balm that glides on effortlessly and feels light on the lips.
You can also treat yourself to a quiet night in with a face masks, a hot epsom salt bath, chocolate and a movie. I like the sheet masks from Holika Holika or The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Face Mask, Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salt Soaking Solution and am partial to peanut M&Ms and a good old-fashioned, cry-your-eyes-out chick flick.
What other ideas do you have or are hoping for this Valentine’s Day?
