I’m so excited to share the first installment of a blog series called “Words from the Wise,” which will include profiles of some of the most powerful experts behind some of my favourite brands and organizations. They’ll share some of their wisdom and advice while telling us a bit about what they do.
A huge thank you to Kelsey Cole for accepting my offer to be the first in the series!
Job Title & Company: PR Associate, Revlon Canada
Share a bit about yourself and what you do: I’m a small town girl in the big city and work in Public Relations for Revlon Canada. I’m really lucky, because I represent three very different brands: Revlon, Almay, and Mitchum; which all challenge and excite me in different ways. While this is a corporate gig, I consider myself part of an internal agency since we do it all in house on our own. To sum it all up: I make people feel beautiful.
Did you always see yourself working in your field? I’m one of the lucky ones, I knew this is exactly where I wanted to be and then I did everything in my power to get here. I decided at 16 after reading Richard Branson’s autobiography that I would go into business. Marketing seemed like the perfect way to channel my academia and strong artistic, creative side – so that’s what I studied. I wanted to work in beauty because it was always a burning passion of mine. I was that girl with magazine pages all over her wall, sneaking makeup from my mom’s kit to practice the looks on the pages… so the beauty business was a no-brainer.
How did you end up in your current position? I worked very, very hard for a long time and seized every opportunity I could find. Beauty was planned, marketing was planned, but PR was by happenstance. It really chose me as a career and it felt meant to be. My love of people, events, and story-telling lead to opportunities to assist the PR teams at my previous companies, and then one day I was handed the reins when there wasn’t enough support happening from the agency. I’m a big believer in Social Networking and kept my career highlights (PR included) documented on LinkedIn which is where Revlon found me. When Revlon comes knocking… you answer. The rest is history.
What’s been the biggest highlight of your career to date? This is a tough one! My biggest pinch me moments tie between helping backstage at NYFW with global and Gucci Westman’s team, and coordinating Olivia Wilde’s look sponsorship for Tiff. I am such a huge fan girl of her makeup artist (Melanie Inglessis) and I learned so much about the business and myself in a span of a few hours working with her that I will cherish forever. Being formally recognized in my industries (cosmetics, marketing & PR) was pretty amazing too, I feel very humbled to be where I am today.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Be nice to people, I mean genuinely nice. This is also my favourite piece of advice to give. One of my mentors frames it a little more profoundly “people are the most important part of an organization, never forget that.” For me it’s just as simple as honesty, respect and genuine sunshiney smiles. Whether it’s the guy in the mail room or the Editor-in-Chief of a top publication, treat them exactly the same… like gold. (and mean it!)
Why do you enjoy what you do? I LOVE what I do!!!! Life’s far too short to waste your precious time doing anything other than what makes you happy.
